Economy is analysed

Posted Fri 26th August 2011 at 13:51

Alderney's economy is under the spotlight.

Guernsey-based Island Analysis is evaluating Alderney's current economic situation to help the States produce a long-term plan.

As part of the project key individuals are being interviewed, while residents are being asked to fill in a questionnaire.

States chief executive Roy Burke said: "Fundamentally we need to understand the current economic situation a little bit better than we do at the moment.

"There are lots of stories about the recession and how it's impacted on Alderney and I don't think there's any doubt that Alderney is in some difficulty - and has been for a while - but we just need to get some groundwork done.

"The data collection will help us put together a plan to develop the economy and look forward to a more prosperous future."

Mr Burke said it was vital islanders contributed to the plan.

"This is a classic SWOT analysis: strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The views of a whole range of people are required before we make any decisions, so whereas the States of Alderney understands strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, the views of other people are crucial to a fully developed plan. It's really important that everyone who can contribute does contribute."

Mr Burke believes Island Analysis will provide value for money.

"We think we've got a good deal. We've been through a fairly extensive process with the provider and reduced the costs down from the original budget.

"Ultimately the proof of the pudding is in the eating and we'll wait to see where they get to with the first part of the project, but if we're not satisfied we'll go back to the provider and renegotiate."

Mr Burke said he hoped a draft economic plan would be completed in early autumn.
