More tourists are choosing Alderney

Posted Fri 11th July 2008 at 09:00

More than 1,000 ferry passengers visited Alderney in May.

The figure represents a 502 per cent increase on last year, when just 166 people journeyed to the island by boat.

Alderney's marketing and public relations manager, Joanna Parmentier, said Manche Iles Express's improved ferry timetable was the main reason behind the success.

She said: "A meeting with Manche Iles Express took place last year to discuss the regularity of the ferry service and since then more direct sailings from France and Guernsey have taken place.

"This has helped increase the number of visitors to the island considerably and will hopefully lead to some people returning."

The number of visitors flying into the island has also increased this year. More than 164 private planes touched down in Alderney in May ? an increase of 50 per cent compared with last year.

The number of crew members has also gone up, by 38 per cent, from 301 in 2007 to 415 this year.

Airport manager Keith Webster said: "The statistics for May show a welcome improvement over recent months and are the best figures for the month since 2004.

"The fine weather over the two bank holiday weekends was a major factor in the results although there does seem to be a gradual upswing in general aviation activity following a long winter."
