Derek and friends meet in Alderney

Posted Wed 9th July 2008 at 11:30

Ground-breaking medical engineer Derek Vonberg hosted a special lunch for his former colleagues at the Braye Beach Hotel in June.

Mr Vonberg and his team were responsible for building and running the first medically dedicated cyclotron, which is a particle accelerator used to treat cancer, in the world.

Many of Mr Vonberg's co-workers from his time at London's Hammersmith Hospital travelled to the island for the event, 22 years after Mr Vonberg retired.

Retired professor Terry Jones, one of Mr Vonberg's former colleageus, said: "Derek oversaw a major development in medical science. He always helped his team and was a joy to work with."

Mr Vonberg, who was awarded a CBE in 1980 for his outstanding contribution to medical science, lives in Fraggle Rock with daughter Jane Aireton.
