Brown tail moth caterpillar invasion

Posted Mon 6th June 2016 at 14:00

The number of brown tail moth caterpillars that have emerged this Spring is highest in 20 years, according to a local expert.

Thousands of caterpillars, whose hairs can cause an allergic reaction, have been spotted around Bibette Head, Saye and Corblets.

The caterpillars are between 7mm-38mm in length and dark brown with a distinct white line down each side. They carry up to two million spiked and barbed hairs, which can detach from their body and penetrate skin, causing an irritant reaction. For asthmatics and hay fever sufferers, it is important that the hairs are not inhaled as these may cause severe breathing difficulties.
