WW2 bomb blown up on beach

Posted Fri 5th September 2014 at 08:46

GUERNSEY Police's Bomb Disposal Team was summoned to Alderney last week to blow up a World War II bomb that had been discovered in a field.

The rusting device was discovered by a resident with a metal detector after the field next to Fort Tourgis was ploughed.

The device was half of a high explosive round from a 10.5mm gun, believed to have been fired from beach defence gun which protected Platte Saline and Tourgis.

Guernsey Police was contacted about the discovery just before 10am yesterday WED morning and the two explosives specialists quickly boarded Guernsey Fisheries' Leopardess vessel to travel to the Island to make the device safe.

After examining the shell officers moved it onto the western section of Platte Saline and carried out a controlled explosion.
