TWO parrots, a couple of pirates and a scaled down version of Concorde were among the home-assembled craft taking a nose dive into Braye Harbour yesterday.
Alderney Week's Manpowered Flight event, always crowd-puller, attracted 20 entries and around 600 spectators, who counted each participant down to take off.
The winning team consisted of the staff from local Alderney restaurant Gloria's Food. They chose to construct a Concorde, with those jumping - Tristan Fisher, Josh McColloch and Anna Czarnecka - dressing as air stewardesses and a pilot.
'Last year we decided to enter at the last minute and we entered with a hurriedly made UFO,' said Tristan.
'It was great fun and we wanted to do it again, but we wanted to do it properly.'
They constructed the model last Tuesday night. 'It was built to scale from dimensions we found for a real Concorde on the internet,' he added. 'We wanted to put fireworks on it too but that wasn't allowed for health and safety reasons. It is fantastic to win.'
Alderney Week team member Ilona Soane-Sands said the warm sunny weather had helped bring people to the event.
'The Manpowered Flight contest is always one of the most popular events of Alderney Week but it is fantastic to see such numbers watching and entering.
'There must have been between 500-800 people watching - a huge number and people were queuing up to jump.
Today (FRI) sees another popular Alderney Week staple take place - the Daft Raft Race.
