An "amazing piece of history" was made at the 20th Alderney Air Races when sea planes claimed first and second place in a prestigious maritime air race.
The Schneider Trophy - properly called the Coupe d'Aviation Maritime - started in 1912 as an award for top place in a race for seaplanes and flying boats.
The race, which is now open to all private planes, was part of the 20th Alderney Air Races, organised jointly by Alderney Flying Club and the Royal Aero Records, Racing and Rally Association.
Roderick Moreton won the Schneider Trophy race in his Lake LA4 Buccaneer - the first time in 85 years that a sea plane has won it. Hamish Mitchell, from Ayreshire, Scotland, in his Reims-Cessna F172, also a waterborne aircraft, came second. Third and British Air Racing Champion of 2016 was Mark Turner, flying the season in his homebuilt Van's RV6. Mr Moreton has been air racing for around 10 years. "Being the first amphibian aircraft to win the race since World War II is a lifetime achievement," he said afterwards. Ralph Burridge, organiser of the Air Races on behalf of Alderney Flying Club, said: "The Schneider Trophy is the most prestigious air race in the world, and it was the first time since 1931 that a waterborne aircraft had been awarded the Trophy. It is an amazing piece of history. Second place aircraft was also won by a floatplane. Just like buses, you don't get one for 85 years and along come two at once."
