Alderney was rocked by what felt like an explosion on Wednesday afternoon.
Theories as to what it could have been buzzed around the Island - was it a WW2 bomb being detonated, a gas blast; the sound of the super-fast Dornier finally joining scheduled services?
For once the truth was more exciting than the rumour.
The noise - which felt and sounded like a violent clap of thunder - is believed to have been the supersonic boom generated by an RAF Typhoon jet. On Thursday a Ministry of Defence spokesman confirmed that two Quick Reaction Alert Typhoons were scrambled from RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland and RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire to intercept two Tupolev TU-95s over the Channel. They had been manoeuvring over Guernsey and around the mid Channel at around 2pm before apparently heading westwards to the Cornish coast. While the bombers were in international airspace, they were deviating from a standard route.
The Guernsey Bereavement Service has made three visits to Alderney over the past few months and would like to continue to help you. We are visiting the island again on
Tuesday, 23rd February 2024 and would invite anyone who feels they would like Bereavement Counselling to telephone the Bereavement Service Office on 257778 to make a time to meet one of our counsellors.
