Alderney Airport is to have its main runway resurfaced to the full 23m width and, if a compelling business case is made for it, its short grass runway lengthened and Tarmacked.
The Guernsey States of Deliberation voted unanimously for those two recommendations along with a commitment to work with Alderney on developing a Service Level Agreement for its lifeline routes.
The resolutions came after 12 months of work by the States of Alderney which stemmed from a requete to "future proof" the Alderney airfield originally drafted by the late Paul Arditti and Louis Jean and which centred on widening and lengthening the main runway to accommodate larger aircraft.
In a speech on Wednesday to the States of Deliberation Neil Harvey said that Alderney was no longer seeking to extend the main runway or rebuild the airport terminal.
But he added: "That leaves us rather vulnerable, with very few aircraft types and even fewer airlines able to operate from our modest 880 yards, and certainly does not future proof us for the 25 years as suggested by the report, as all aircraft manufacturers concentrate on designing ever bigger aircraft."
The Guernsey Bereavement Service has made three visits to Alderney over the past few months and would like to continue to help you. We are visiting the island again on
Tuesday, 23rd February 2024 and would invite anyone who feels they would like Bereavement Counselling to telephone the Bereavement Service Office on 257778 to make a time to meet one of our counsellors.
