Saye Campsite no go zone for caravanners again

Posted Mon 27th January 2014 at 11:22

The operators of Saye Beach campsite have criticised a decision by the Building Development and Control Committee to once again ban caravans from the site.

The BDCC voted 3-2 against allowing caravans and campervans back onto Saye Beach campsite after a two year trial.

Mr Simonet said that members had expressed concerns about caravans impacting on the unspoiled ethos of the island. They had also borne in mind the public opinion expressed on the matter and the fact that only one caravan had actually arrived on Alderney during the two year trial.

The law permitting caravans and campervans entry onto the island subject to attaining a licence still stands. "What concerns us most about this is the basis for the decision and also the lack of cohesion between the various committees regarding a strategy for the island," said operators Paul and Steph Hayward in a response to the decision. "The Estates and Services Committee, who have chosen to retain an interest in the running of the campsite, are the ones that made the application.

We are told that campervans and caravans are against the ethos of the island and that is one of the reasons for not allowing them at the campsite from now on."

"This doesn't make sense," they said. "Presumably the same ethos applied two years ago when campervans and caravans were permitted."
