Aurigny is set to replace its ageing Trislanders with a fleet of new twin engine planes.
Interim managing director Mark Darby said they had three types of aircraft in mind and planned to select one this year.
Mr Darby, who was brought in to replace Malcolm Hart after his sudden departure earlier this month, said the cost of maintenance and limited lifespan was the catalyst for the decision.
Speaking on a visit to Alderney just two days after his appointment to the role, he said: "There are always one or two Trislanders tied up in maintenance. They are very labour intensive aircraft. Rather than waiting until we ask the manufacturer for a spare wheel and them saying, 'we don't make them any more', we are coming up with a plan."
They will choose between the Twin Otter, the Dornier 228 and the Let 410. They are all twin engine, 19-seater aircraft with mini aisles. "The specifications of the planes are specifically driven by what we can do here in Alderney, with the existing runway," he explained. "They are more comfortable and more efficient and the last two are faster. If the planes are faster and more reliable we will get better use out of our aircraft."
The Guernsey Bereavement Service has made three visits to Alderney over the past few months and would like to continue to help you. We are visiting the island again on
Tuesday, 23rd February 2024 and would invite anyone who feels they would like Bereavement Counselling to telephone the Bereavement Service Office on 257778 to make a time to meet one of our counsellors.
