'Textbook' helicopter rescue

Posted Thu 3rd July 2008 at 09:45

Guernsey diver Richard Keen has described a rescue mission to try to save a fisherman on board his boat as "textbook".

A 44-year-old man, who has not yet been named, died in hospital in Dorset on Sunday evening after suffering severe chest pains while on board fishing vessel Margaret K.

The man had been about to begin fishing 19 miles off the coast of Alderney.

Vessel owner Mr Keen said: "We were just about to begin fishing when he started feeling pains in his chest.

"The authorities were informed immediately and they did everything they could to help him. The helicopter rescue was clearly a textbook job.

"We returned to Guernsey as soon as he had been airlifted off the boat."

Mr Keen said he had fished with the man on several occasions.

Alderney lifeboat Roy Barker I set out at 10.48am following a call from St Peter Port.

The helicopter, which was dispatched from Portland, reached Margaret K first and immediately airlifted the man to hospital.

The Alderney boat returned to Braye Harbour at 11.30am.
