Glyn was born 8th March 1937, the eldest son of Wesley and Jenny Chandler in the small village or Chisledon, Wiltshire.
It was there that his association with Alderney first began, as Nick, Pete and Fiff Gaudion and their parents Mick and Iris were located there following the evacuation of Alderney during the war. The boys were to form a friendship which was to last a lifetime.
From a very early age Glyn developed a love of speed and motorcycles. By the time he was 10 he had decided that when he left school he would become a speedway rider. His father agreed to this on the understanding that he would finance it himself and that when he left school he would also take up a proper apprenticeship of some sort. For the next five years Glyn saved every penny he earned from his many part time jobs to enable him to buy his first speedway bike. At 15 he left school and became a trainee motor mechanic so his father reluctantly gave his consent to him at least trying to find a team place at one of the tracks.
The Guernsey Bereavement Service has made three visits to Alderney over the past few months and would like to continue to help you. We are visiting the island again on
Tuesday, 23rd February 2024 and would invite anyone who feels they would like Bereavement Counselling to telephone the Bereavement Service Office on 257778 to make a time to meet one of our counsellors.
