AWT appeal on PIB affected seabirds

Alderney Wildlife Trust officers are appealing for people to keep a look out for poorly or dead seabirds after spotting what they believe to be a PIB slick a few miles off Alde' slick' is already thought to have fouled at least three birds, two Guillemots and a Razorbill, and marine wildlife will be at risk for days to come.

Concerns were first raised at around 8.45am on Thursday morning when members of the wildlife team were taking visitors out to Burhou. En route they spotted two Guillemots in the Alderney Swinge with their feathers fouled in a sticky substance.

When the boat approached the birds were able to dive but not able fly.

Meanwhile the Environment Agency sent out word that it was investigating what was feared to be another PIB release in the Channel.

Polyisobutene, or PIB as it is known, is a sticky substance used to clean the oil out of ships' bilges. At present it can be legally dumped at sea. Since April more than 1,000 birds have been washed up on the UK south coast covered in the additive.

The AWT asked Aurigny crew to be on the lookout for any slick, and at 5.45pm on Thursday a passenger on a flight to Guernsey contacted the AWT to say she had seen 'a large spill, whitish in colour with brown edges' halfway through her flight.
