Guernsey agrees to split costs on Breakwater survey

Posted Fri 10th August 2018 at 11:18

The States of Guernsey has agreed to split costs with Alderney to carry out a sonar survey of the rubble mound that the Breakwater sits on.

A sonar survey of the rubble mound has not been carried out for some years. If it has substantially moved it could compromise the stability of the superstructure.

The Committee for Environment and Infrastructure (CfEI) looks after the Breakwater.

They initially refused to pay for a sonar survey saying that they did not have the funds to do so. However when the General Services Committee offered to commission the survey boat to examine the seabed at the sewage outfall at Platte Saline, potentially in preparation for lengthening it, the CfEI agreed to pay for a hydrographic survey of the mound. The two islands will split the logistical costs of getting the boat to Alderney and accommodation for surveyors.
