The owner of Alderney's only angling business has announced it is to close at the end of next month - claiming poor air freight provision is to blame.
Mark Harding has run Alderney Angling since 2003 and has expanded the company into a thriving mail order business with a turnover last year of £550,000.
But he says that sending goods by air can take up to three weeks to get to customers in the UK smnf Europe, compared to a matter of days if a customer was to order from his competitors. The final nail in the coffin, he says, is the transition from Trislander aircraft to an all Dornier fleet. He says the dimensions of the hold space are too short to carry most fishing rods.
"Emotionally and mentally this has been a heartbreaking decision," he said. "We have put in masses of unpaid hours and we've always tried to support the Alderney community. We have recently invested £10,000 in new software for our mail order business and £15,000 on relocating our business to the harbour, to larger and more accessible premises. We notified the States and Chamber of Commerce two and a half years ago that the hold in the Dornier was not big enough to carry our fishing rods
