ALDERNEY friends of the legendary Beatles producer George Martin shared fond memories of him yesterdayWED.
Martin, known as the "Fifth Beatle" passed away on Tuesday aged 90 at his home in Wiltshire.
Mr Martin brought a home on Braye Road in Aldeney in the mid 80s, after neighbours on the mainland recommended the Island to him.
He kept a power boat moored in Braye Harbour and a Morris 1000 convertible on Island to drive when he was over.
Mr Martin visited Alderney for around 30 years, appreciating, said his friends, the peace and quiet of the Island and the fact that he could go about in relative anonymity.
Biddy Worsley was one of his friends. Her son Charlie - who now lives in Guernsey - sold Montrose to Mr Martin and his wife Judy in the mid1980s, when Mr Worsley was the owner of what is now Alderney Estates.
Mrs Worsley was close friends with the Martins' neighbours in Wiltshire and got to know George and his wife through them. "He came to Alderney because he wanted to get away from England and his neighbours said he must go to Alderney, where we were," said Mrs Worsley. "They bought a house in Braye Road and lived in Alderney for a year, although they were always travelling. Without fail George was the nicest man you could meet. He was born with this tremendous musicality. I think he liked Alderney for the same reasons everybody else does - the peace and quiet and the fact that no-body bothered him here. He was a most lovely man."
The Guernsey Bereavement Service has made three visits to Alderney over the past few months and would like to continue to help you. We are visiting the island again on
Tuesday, 23rd February 2024 and would invite anyone who feels they would like Bereavement Counselling to telephone the Bereavement Service Office on 257778 to make a time to meet one of our counsellors.
